Who We Are?
Background information
KIBERA REFORMATION AND TRANSFORMATION CENTRE (KRTC), is a community based organization (CBO) located in Kibera Slum in Kenya. The organization was formed in the year 2003 by an interest group of youth from the slum in response to the increasing number of slum youth taking to various vices such as drug abuse, early teenage pregnancy, crime and street life. These slum children grow up in an environment of extreme poverty, unhealthy social dicta and highly compromised social fabrics making a majority of them end up in street life thus exposing them to sexual harassment, early teenage pregnancies, HIV/AIDS, malnutrition, disease, violence, crime and drug abusive among other vices. This poverty ravaged community survives on a dollar a day.
We then proceeded with supporting our members with small businesses which include; video shop, laundery services, cyber cafe, food kiosks among other small businesses.In these programs we have effectively been able to undertake talent search, harnessed and used such talents to the benefit of the youths. This has helped reshape their thinking and their attitude towards life and made it possible for us to effectively re-integrate those who had run away from their homes. Our goal is to address the needs of these vulnerable youth and children in the slum area and nurture them into responsible, reliable, dignified and self-reliant citizens.We continue to identify their talents and mold such kids into responsible useful individuals with a sense of purpose in their lives. Through the talent search programs, youth have greatly benefited some getting employed in major football clubs in Kenya and others travelling overseas as actors.
Jan Hansen has been the main donor since the inception of KRTC in the year 2003. He has invested heavily in all our programs.
Scope of our activities
- Sports – KRTC has since its inception in 2003 used sporting and art as means of achieving its objectives and goals. KRTC runs the following sports programs;
Football: KRTC’s Golden Boys and Golden Girls football teams engage over 160 youth, offering structured training, educational sponsorships, and pathways to professional leagues and scholarships.
Women Volleyball and Netball: Established in 2017, these teams provide young and single mothers with training, tournament opportunities, and life skills support, alongside investments in their welfare and nutritional needs.
Cestoball: KRTC pioneers Cestoball in Kenya, supporting players with training, equipment, and logistics, while empowering slum girls and promoting their participation in national and international games. - Education Program – In January 2004, Kibera Reformation and Transformation Center started an education program. The need for this program came after the realization that most of the children who were in our project were not schooling. Most of them were participating in football and other KRTC activities but would later go to the streets or indulge in illicit activities like taking drugs, gambling or even stealing. The program started as a partial sponsorship for nine children with a budget of 150 USD which has since increased to supporting 20 students, 10 boys and 10 girls.
- Economic Empowerment – In 2013, recognizing the harsh realities of poverty and lack of income in Kibera, KRTC expanded its mission by establishing small businesses to provide economic support and mentorship to the youth. These ventures serve as income sources and platforms for skill development, creating job opportunities for boys and girls in the community.
- Support for street children – KRTC has programs that are supporting about 35 street children from the streets of Nairobi, we have a support team of three well trained social workers who have been working with them for years and have established trust and good relationships with the kids.
