KIBERA REFORMATION AND TRANSFORMATION CENTRE (KRTC), is a community based organization (CBO) located in Kibera Slum in Kenya. The organization was formed in the year 2003 by an interest group of youth from the slum. At KRTC our objective is to help the Kibera slum dwellers realize their worth and dignity in the society through programs that support their socio-economic development. To attract youth attention and win their commitment, the group initially started out on activities meant to shift their attention from various vices such as use of drugs, early teenage sexual engagement, street muggings among others.
These slum children, a majority of whom end up as street children, grow up in an environment of extreme poverty, unhealthy social dicta and highly compromised social fabrics. They are under constant threat of sexual harassment, early teenage pregnancies, HIV/AIDS, malnutrition, disease, violence, crime and drug abusive among other vices. This poverty ravaged community lives below a dollar a day.
In the beginning we used programs that were meant to draw youth attention from a life of idleness and directing their energy in time consuming activities (recreational) such as Sports and Arts. We have established Girls’ and Boys Football Clubs and an arts program. In these programs we have effectively been able to undertake talent search, harnessed and used such talents to the benefit of the youths. This has helped reshape their thinking and their attitude towards life and made it possible for us to effectively re-integrate those who had ran away from their homes. We continue to identify their talents and mold such kids into responsible useful individuals with a sense of purpose in their lives. Through the talent search programs, youth have greatly benefited some getting employed in major football clubs in Kenya and others travelling overseas as actors.
KIBERA REFORMATION AND TRANSFORMATION CENTRE (KRTC), an initiative of a group of concerned youth in the Kibera slum was formed in the year 2003 as a community based organization (CBO) with an objective of helping the needy children growing up in an environment of extreme poverty and constant threat of malnutrition, disease, violence, crime and drug abusive.
In a nutshell the community is underprivileged and exposed to diverse dangers, a condition that necessitated and informed the formation of KRTC by the youth group to address some of these challenges through activities that would divert their attention to criminal activities as well as improve their livelihoods. The group has grown from an informal establishment supporting football activities into a major CBO in Kibera supporting its members with a range of popular livelihood activities.
