Youth Outreach Ministry at Kibera Reformation and Transformation Centre (KRTC)

At Kibera Reformation and Transformation Centre (KRTC), our core mission is to transform the lives of vulnerable youth in Kibera, empowering them to break free from the cycles of poverty, crime, and social exclusion. Established in 2003 by a group of local youth with a vision for change, KRTC has since become a beacon of hope and support for thousands of young people living in one of the largest urban slums in Nairobi, Kenya.

Our Youth Outreach Ministry is the heartbeat of our work, dedicated to reaching out to young individuals who are at risk of falling through the cracks of society. We engage with youth who are grappling with issues such as drug abuse, early teenage pregnancy, crime, and street life, offering them a path to rehabilitation, self-discovery, and empowerment.

Key Components of Our Youth Outreach Ministry:

  1. Sports and Arts for Positive Engagement We believe in the power of sports and the arts to inspire, rehabilitate, and offer young people a sense of purpose. Through our football clubs, art initiatives, and talent development programs, we provide a platform for young people to discover and hone their skills. These activities not only help in improving physical fitness but also foster teamwork, discipline, and resilience—qualities that are essential for personal growth and success.

  2. Life Skills Training and Counseling In addition to sports and arts, we offer essential life skills training to help youth build self-confidence, communication skills, and critical thinking. We also provide one-on-one counseling to address the emotional and psychological needs of young individuals, supporting their journey toward healing and self-reliance.

  3. Mentorship Programs At KRTC, we understand the significance of role models in the lives of young people. Our mentorship programs connect youth with successful and experienced individuals from various fields, such as sports, arts, business, and leadership. Mentors guide, inspire, and encourage youth to set goals, overcome challenges, and make informed decisions about their futures.

  4. Rehabilitation and Reintegration For youth who have been involved in criminal activities or substance abuse, our rehabilitation and reintegration programs are designed to guide them back into society in a constructive manner. We provide alternative livelihoods, vocational training, and education to equip these young individuals with the skills needed to rebuild their lives and contribute positively to their communities.

  5. Scholarships and Employment Opportunities Through our partnerships with local and international organizations, we offer scholarships for education and skills development programs, as well as employment opportunities in various sectors. Our successful reintegration programs have seen some of the youth we’ve worked with find employment in major Kenyan football clubs, while others have ventured into the arts, becoming actors in both local and international productions.

  6. Community-Based Outreach and Awareness We believe that sustainable change requires community involvement. Our outreach efforts extend beyond individual youth to include families and local communities. We organize awareness campaigns, workshops, and community dialogues to address issues affecting the youth, promote healthy lifestyles, and raise awareness about the dangers of substance abuse, early pregnancies, and criminal activities.

  7. Collaboration with Stakeholders KRTC works hand in hand with government agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), local businesses, and community leaders to create a network of support and resources for the youth in Kibera. Our collaborations help to amplify the impact of our programs, ensuring that young people are not only supported through our services but are also connected to larger opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Success Stories

Our success is best reflected in the stories of the youth we serve. Many young people, who were once caught in the vicious cycle of crime and drug addiction, have turned their lives around with the support of our programs. Through their determination, coupled with our mentorship, they have gone on to become leaders in their communities, players in national football leagues, and successful entrepreneurs.
